02 February 2012

Oh boy, oh boy!!!

Yes, I just used three exclamation marks in my title.  You see, people tell me how lucky I am that I get to do all girls clothes.  The boy section is no fun they say.  I look longingly over at the girl section and wander over there even though I don't have any girls they say.  Well, anyone who doesn't think boy's clothes are any fun never had 5 girls first, I guess, because I am hooked!  I've mostly been buying things since this boy wants his momma snuggling, not sewing, but as soon as I realized what a crush I had on these knit jumpsuit deals, my mind began ticking, and I worked on this a few minutes here and there.
What I wanted was a western jumpsuit, but out of knit, to keep it super comfy for the both of us.  I had grand intentions of doing a tutorial, but as I stitched the pockets, those pointy yokes, and other finicky details I had visions of a mass amount of hate email coming from frustrated sewers.
So.  I didn't.  Plus, there are a few changes I'd make next time around, since I made it up as I went along, but I think Drummer rocks the western vibe.
I used some vintage horse shoe snaps on the pockets and regular snaps on the placket and leg openings.  I'm really digging snap usage.
I feel a tutorial coming on because I learned a few things about snappy snaps while making this.
Normally I do my no big dill insignia on the machine, free-hand, but I sat down and actually wrote it out, all rope like, and did needle and thread in hand.
I even did some multi-tasking while stitching (Pearl studying her 8's in multiplication and Olive studying her subtraction facts).
Yes, I'm quite talented with my toes.  Letterman, here I come!
So.  I am looking forward to this new world of boy sewing.  No ruffles?  Nice.
And Drummer, being the responsible cowbaby he is, groomed that horse when it was through riding.
And we will be trying to free horsehair from his little clutches for days to come.
Happy February
and
Giddyup already!

That is so stinkin' cute! (Well, the outfit AND the baby :) I have two boys and a girl. My oldest has been all about cowboys since he was very little, so I have had a lot of fun sewing for him. Western shirts, chaps, vests...fun and different from girl sewing, but I like that too.

Hooray for boys. I love it.

Katy, your talent never ceases to amaze me! That is the most darling little boy outfit! I did it the opposite of you and had only one girl first then a house full of boys. I am glad to see someone else likes dressing up boys too!

Heidi @ Boys, Buttons, and Butterflies said...

Yup, I think it is bc you had girls first.....I am on the fourth boy and ready to DIE of boy clothes boredom!

Katy this is so adorable! I love how you freshened up the western look with that lovely limey green!

I think one of the main reasons people don't like sewing boy clothes it that they are so simple, any flaws stand out like mad, where as girl clothes you can hide a lot amongst the ruffles! (Also there is not as much variation, so we can all recognize what boy clothes are supposed to look like, and if they are a bit off we can all feel that it's odd even if not exactly why)

Your quality is impeccable which I happen to think is the most fun part of making boy clothes!

Lynette @ My Craft Discovery said...

Oh that is so fun. And I was wondering if you just free handed your "no big dill," but I love how you made this one look like rope. It totally adds to the western look.

That is awesome. I adore everything about it. Love the cute baby model, too. Nicely done.

Oh, and it has never occurred to me to snip buttons before sending things to Goodwill. You're sneaky, and smart.

I love boy clothes too! I just had my fourth baby- but my first girl, and I tell ya, I LOVE the girl clothes, but sometimes my eyes just wander over to those cute little boy jammies and feel a bit sad no one will wear them. Then I find something ruffly and pink and get over it...
Love your little western outfit- so cute!

Diane Mars said...

Very cute and of course the outfit is too! Wow it looks like it would be a hard one to make and you did a great job!

Your new header looks GREAT too. Love it.

Very super cute. I esp. love the embroidery. It makes it. As a mom of a boy after girls, I also love sewing for my little guy. If you DO ever think about tutorials, I promise I wouldn't send hate mail, just kisses.

Oh my how stinkin' cute!!! I have 3 boys, and have rarely sewn for them- although I crochet for them, and do both for my girls. A tutorial on this may change my mind!

Emily said...

Yay! So excited to see you doing boy clothes, and this is ADORABLE.

Emily said...

Absolutely adorable!! Love the yoke and the pockets and the pictures and your toe skills and your new header.

Please, for the love, use a less darling model next time, I could barely appreciate your fine work because of the gorgeous morsel of love, your son!

Kelly said...

That is adorable! I have five boys and am expecting my sixth in April, and yes, he's a boy too. Girl clothes are lots of fun to look at, but boy clothes can be adorable as well. I've already managed to buy several outfits for my newbie though I don't really *need* them!

Oh, and I'd love a tutorial on snaps -- I'm pretty clueless!

Joy said...

Soooo cute!! I wish I was at your level of sewing expertise! I just had my first boy after three girls about six weeks after you had Drummer, and I have to admit I've lamented the boys' clothing section a time or two already! But you've got me thinking outside the box a bit even if I can't do what you did! Thanks! :-)

Laura at Ms. Smartie Pants said...

Oh my word! That is the cutest thing ever, the outfit too! ;) You should check out, I Am Momma, Hear me Roar, she does great boy projects, not that you need any inspiration!

Sam Adams said...

I would love love to see a snap tutorial! Whenever I imagine how wonderful they would be on my sons pants I think of how sad and disappointed I would be when I ruin them. Please please show me how!

beck said...

LOVE IT! I have 3 girls with a boy on the way and I think the same. Boy clothes are so fun. I actually had a stash of boy stuff waiting for whenever my little guy would come along. Really wish I had one of those western jumpers! It is amazing and looks like something I would have no patience to sew.

carey said...

ahh! i love it! i've had a very similar outfit envisioned (but a shorts version) for years, but i lack the talent to make it happen. never would have thought of using knit though. didn't think you could with a collar like that. yer a genius. :)

kelly said...

So lovely Katy...I had my boy first and then had 4 girls in a row....opposite of you..kind of :-)))) but like you I think dressing boys is beautiful...gets even more fun when they get bigger...

Oooooh my gosh. That face is to. much. Our boys are just days apart... and though I only have 3 kids, I feel a smidgen of the growing pains of adding just that one more child to the family. But those faces... worth it. ( :

~Kelly~ said...

Adorable. All of those little details you add just make it more awesome! Drummer is so sweet, too! As a mother of two boys, I've always thought it was not fun picking out boys clothes. But, I can see after having all of your little ladies it is probably a nice change of pace. Keep stitching~ you are amazingly talented!!

Maggie said...

Wow Katy, just Wow! That is seriously the cutest little baby boy outfit I have ever seen. I love what you did with the pockets...precious!!

I have three boys and I have always thought boy clothes were cute, way cuter than most people think...although I like sewing for my girl a bit more.
I would love to sew a jumpsuit or two up to give as a gift, western or not, dish out your info! Please!

As a mum of 4 girls and with desperate longings for a boy, I long to buy boys clothes (I'm not as talented with a sewing machine as you), but everyone say "oh but girls clothes are so much prettier!". Not when you are all pinked out they're not!
Drummer's outfit looks amazing. Such a cute boy. x

Cate said...

OK, The outfit you made is so very cute, but to tell you the truth, I can't stop looking at that darn cute boy!! He is the cutest little man!! Beautiful baby. I have 3 girls (so not as many as you)and one boy. There is something so different and sweet about the boy! I don't know how you get any sewing done, I wouldn't want to put him down for a momement!! But selfishly, glad you do, since I love reading your blog!!

Oh Katy! He is so stinking cute! I love the Western jumpsuit so much and think it is just one more of many testaments to your amazing talent. Just whipped it up? Sigh.

I have a boy and I'm enjoying the boy sewing, although I think it's the prints that are most limiting! Lots of solids, stripes and plaids!
